General Information

We always say: ‘we…’ and they always say: ‘I…’

Kit-Ling Tjon Pian Gi loves to work in her studio undisturbed and alone. But in 1997 she is asked to discuss the possibility for visual artists to unite. Suriname had been chained by the military coup and dictatorship from 1980 until 1987. In a world of developing globalization, Suriname had become an isolated country. Convinced that barriers could only be destroyed together, Kit-Ling Tjon Pian Gi devoted herself to the foundation of the FVAS, Federation of Visual Artists in Suriname. She has been charter member and secretary since the inception in 1998. She has also been the coordinator of all major projects initiated and executed by the FVAS.
